Online Communities Visual

Posted by Malcolm Drew

We've seen lots of numbers and stats in our class lessons about the usage of many online communities. While reading some news online at Huffingtonpost, I came across two efforts at putting online community activity into a 'geographic' visual.

This trend seemed to begin with a 'for fun' attempt to represent the online presence of different communities using a world map model in 2007. In 2010, two more attempts were made. One by the original author, Randall Monroe, and the other by Ethan Bloch on Flowtown. The updated version by Monroe is imaged above and Bloch's version is below.

The maps provide a nice visual of similar educational value to the stats we received in class, perhaps pointing out communities which could be used or repurposed for education.
